Overview

The Department of Family and Community Medicine provides undergraduate education, master and fellowship programs in Family and Community Medicine, training in the Saudi Board of Family Medicine as well as the Arab Board in both Family Medicine and Community Medicine. The department has attracted highly qualified Saudi and non-Saudi faculty who have contributed to the development of the curricula which later formed the basis for the Saudi and Arab Board’s Fellowship in Family and Community Medicine.

Mission

The department is dedicated to providing quality education and training in the fields of family medicine and community medicine to medical students, interns, residents and other health professionals as well as promoting, encouraging and supporting excellence in health care, research, faculty development and continuing professional development.

Goals

On successful completion of the courses outlined below, the medical student should be able to:

  • Acquire the necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes in the field of Family and Community Medicine.
  • Develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for continued, self-directed learning.
  • Learn by sharing experiences with peers while working in groups during field activities.
  • Maintain a number of fundamental values, competencies, continual improvement and mutual support.

Undergraduate Courses

Comprehensive Health Care I (MDFM 204)

On successful completion of this course students are able to discuss and identify the importance of family and community medicine, basic concepts and epidemiology of health and disease, aspects of health planning and how the environment affects the health of the family and the community.

Comprehensive Health Care II (MDFM 336)

On successful completion of this course the students should be able to understand the fundamental concepts of and acquire the basic knowledge in attitudes and skills of health education, biostatistics, epidemiology and nutrition as related to the medical and health sciences.

Primary Health Care (MDFM 402)

On successful completion of this course the students should be able to understand the fundamental concepts of family and community medicine, and to acquire the basic knowledge, attitude and skills of family and community medicine and the skills of community fieldwork and research methods.

Biomedical Ethics in Islam (MDFM 405)

On successful completion of this course the students will understand the basic principles of Islamic and international medical ethics and appreciate the spirit and skills of self-learning so as to be committed to a biomedical ethics that are inline with Islamic values and ethics.
